OUR PARISH'S SAN DAMIANO CRUCIFIX

The History or the San Damiano Crucifix
An unknown Umbrian artist painted the Crucifix Icon in the 12th Century. It was more than likely painted for the Church of San Damiano (St. Damian), located in Assisi, Umbria, Italy to hang over the Altar. In 1257, the Poor Clares left San Damiano, took the Crucifix with them, and carefully kept it for 700 years. In Holy Week of 1957, it was placed on public view for the first time in the Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi.
