REASONS TO STUDY THE BIBLE

  • To address the apostolic exhortation, Verbum Domini, by Pope Benedict XVI, for the flowering of “a new season of greater love for sacred Scripture on the part of every member of the People of God, so that their prayerful and faith-filled reading of the Bible will, with time, deepen their personal relationship with Jesus.”
  • To adhere to The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Second Edition): “The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful . . . to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine scriptures. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.”  #133
  • To be in accord with Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi: On Evangelism in the Modern World, "Those who are already disciples of Jesus Christ… [need] to be constantly nourished by the Word of God so that they may grow in their Christian life."
  • To obey our Lord Jesus Christ who said, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:3-5)

Preparation:  Weekly readings and questions for reflection

Energize your relationship with Christ! We will study Jesus' life and teachings as presented in the Gospels, combined with a video tour of the places where He lived and traveled with His disciples.  This study explores the entirety of Jesus’ life:  who He is, what He is really like, what He taught, what He did for our salvation, and what all of this means for us as Catholics today. We will study the first five lessons this fall, followed by the final five lessons in the spring.  Workbook required. Registration deadline for this session is Sunday, October 4th.

Study:  Discernment: Making Decisions with God

Preparation:  None

In this six-week workshop we will look at some of the ways that we can watch for God’s presence in our decision-making process. We will begin with a look at the long tradition of “discernment of spirits” — how we can increase our attentiveness to our deepest feelings and desires, and to God’s movement in our lives. We will then explore a few different ways of discernment that make use of our reason, our imagination, and our emotions. Most sessions will allow some time for participants to reflect privately on a particular decision he or she may be considering and will provide a chance for group members to share their experiences with the discernment process.

Fridays, 7:30 – 9:00 PM

Facilitator:  Anne Clifton (609-936-0596 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Study: The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy, Part 1 – an Ascension study by Thomas Smith & Sarah Christmyer

Preparation:  Weekly readings and reflection questions

The Prophets spoke God’s word to a people who had gone astray in their faith. While they called for repentance and a return to the Covenant, prophets also revealed God’s plan and purposes, and help us better understand Jesus’ work and message. Part 1 will cover an Introduction, Hosea, Jonah, and Isaiah. Discover who these prophets were in their time and how their messages apply to us today. After discussion of the reflection questions, each session includes viewing commentary with Thomas Smith. Additional prophets will be covered in Part 2 during Lent 2021. Workbook required. Registration deadline for this session is Sunday, October 4th.

Preparation:  None

When our troubles seem to mount like rising floodwaters, God desires to reassure us with His love, hope, and precious peace.  During this study, we’ll explore verses and passages of the Bible that will help us understand, cope with, and respond to the difficult times we will encounter during our journey through life. This warm and welcoming group is ideal for beginners and offers optional time of prayer and fellowship.

Study:  Pilgrim People— Little Rock Scripture Study

Preparation:  Weekly readings and questions for reflection

Our four-week study will include major pilgrimages in Scripture —the journey of trust with Abraham and Sarah, the journey of freedom with Moses and the Hebrew people, the journey of exile and return with Israel, and the journey of discipleship with Jesus and his followers. God's call sometimes leads and sometimes sends, and the destinations can be new and wondrous or even dark and dangerous. What makes the journey a pilgrimage is God's abiding companionship.

Fridays, 9:15 – 10:45 AM

Facilitator:  Brenda Loury (609-802-1758 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Study: The Book of Psalms

The book of Psalms is a rich tapestry of praises, laments, meditations, and urgent supplications which express the heart and soul of humanity. They put into words our deepest hurts, longings, thoughts and prayers, and gently guide us into a deeper and genuine relationship with God. Join us for this wonderful study and enjoy the fellowship and friendship of other women in our parish.

THE IMPACT OF BIBLE STUDY ON GROUP MEMBERS

Bible Study means to me peace from a hectic day or week.  To come to Bible Study after such a week makes me feel so much more at ease with life.  I feel Bible Study gives me a sense of wanting to meditate and read more of the Word of the Lord, and I can now share it with people in my life and anyone else I may come in contact with. Pat Cirillo

I have been attending Bible study groups for several years and find it to be soul nourishing and strengthening for the seasons of life that we all go through.   As I started to study and understand the Word of God, I felt an insatiable hunger to want more of Him in my life because of the peace that comes with the knowledge of God's Word.  I encourage you to dedicate some of your time to reading and studying His Word with other believers in a Bible study group, and I can assure you that you will be blessed by it in more ways than you could ever have imagined!  Eva Petruzziello

I'd been yearning to study the Bible with others for many years after trying to read it on my own and just not feeling fulfilled.  Studying the Bible helps me to recognize God in my life and listen for Him. I am getting so much out of Bible study that I now attend two Bible Study groups each week! Cindy Sosa
