REASONS TO STUDY THE BIBLE

- To address the apostolic exhortation, Verbum Domini, by Pope Benedict XVI, for the flowering of “a new season of greater love for sacred Scripture on the part of every member of the People of God, so that their prayerful and faith-filled reading of the Bible will, with time, deepen their personal relationship with Jesus.”

- To adhere to The Catechism of the Catholic Church (Second Edition): “The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful . . . to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine scriptures. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” #133

- To be in accord with Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi: On Evangelism in the Modern World, "Those who are already disciples of Jesus Christ… [need] to be constantly nourished by the Word of God so that they may grow in their Christian life."

- To obey our Lord Jesus Christ who said, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:3-5)

Study: What We Believe: The Beauty of the Catholic Faith – Ascension study by Marcellino D'Ambrosio and Andrew and Sarah Swafford

Preparation: Weekly readings, questions for reflection and Scripture meditations. Workbook required.

Preview here: https://ascensionpress.com/pages/what-we-believe-the-beauty-of-the-catholic-faith-free-preview

This study will outline who we are as Catholics, what we believe, and how we live. Jesus is “the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), and the early Christians were known for being people of the “Way.” The Catholic Faith is not a mere “philosophy” or set of ideas, let alone merely another political interest group. Rather, being Catholic means making a journey into the heart of God not as isolated individuals, but in the company of a family, a community, that Jesus called the Church (see Matthew 16:18).

Fridays, 7:30 – 9:00 PM – Meeting via Zoom only

Facilitator: Anne Clifton (609-936-0596 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Study: Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible – an Ascension study by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer

Preparation: Weekly readings and reflection questions. Workbook required.

Have you given up on reading the Bible because it seems too difficult? Join us to grasp the “big picture” as we read through parts of 14 books in the Bible and learn about 12 distinct time periods in Scripture. Starting with Creation in Genesis, we’ll follow the narrative through the Old Testament all the way to Jesus in Luke’s Gospel and the Early Church in Acts. Discover the story of salvation history and how we fit into God’s plan. At each session, we will view recorded commentary by Jeff Cavins and discuss reflection questions. 8 sessions.

The Bible is full of passages in which angelic beings are sent to accomplish God’s will. Angels speak for God, direct the course of nations, and protect God’s people. They worship God and deliver God’s judgment. Our study this fall will examine some of the Bible’s most fascinating passages about angels, exploring their ministry on God’s behalf and drawing insights for our own spiritual lives.

TESTIMONIES OF GROUP MEMBERS

Bible Study is fulfilling, informative and thought provoking. I had no idea what to expect when I registered, but I knew, right from the first day, that this was what the Holy Spirit led me to. The groups are welcoming and Scripture focused. The meetings are informal and friendly, allowing you to share your thoughts on Scripture if you desire to. There is no pressure. I learn something during each session, and I’m drawn to read more of the Bible during the week. We are called to know, love and serve our Lord. Bible Study helps us to know Him further and deepen our relationship with Him. Peter Eckel

The Bible studies are awesome. They allow a group of friendly people the opportunity to discuss Scripture in a relaxed setting. Every week I learn something about the Lord, the Lord's word, and from everybody else in the group. I hope that the Bible studies go on indefinitely. Michael Huber

Attending Bible study groups is soul nourishing and strengthening for each of the seasons of our lives.   As I started to study and understand the Word of God, I felt an insatiable hunger for more of Him in my life because of the peace that comes with the knowledge of God's Word.  I encourage you to dedicate some of your time to reading and studying His Word with other believers and can assure you that you will be blessed by it in more ways than you ever imagined!  Eva Petruzziello
