Answering Christ’s Call to Serve the Incarcerated
As Christians, we are called to live out the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:36: “I was in prison and you visited me.” At St. David the King, we are blessed to have Deacon Tom Baker and several other parishioners who faithfully answer this call by visiting FCI Fort Dix, the largest Federal prison in the U.S., located just 35-40 minutes from our parish.
Together with other volunteers in the area, we reach out to the Catholic community at FCI Fort Dix, providing regular communion services, scripture study, and opportunities for prayer and conversation. These visits offer spiritual support and a sense of hope to those incarcerated, helping them to reconnect with their faith. Each year, several adults in custody prepare for the sacraments of initiation at Easter, and our team provides catechesis and guidance as they journey toward full communion with the Church.
Our visits typically take place on weekends and occasionally on certain weekday evenings. We strive to bring Christ’s love and presence to those who need it most, offering both practical support and spiritual companionship.
If you are interested in exploring this important ministry, or if you would like to learn more about the experience, please contact Deacon Tom Baker at deacontombaker@gmail.com. He is happy to share more about the ministry, answer any questions you may have, and connect you with other prison volunteer opportunities throughout the Diocese of Trenton.
By participating in this ministry, we not only serve those in need, but also answer Christ’s call to bring light and hope into places of darkness.
